It has been decided by the Minister of Education and Culture that the national exam will be scrapped starting from 2021.Bekasi (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) announced the education and culture ministry’s decision to put an end to the national exam from 2021.
"It has been decided by the Minister of Education and Culture that the national exam will be scrapped starting from 2021. It means no nationwide exam will be held in 2021," Jokowi remarked after the inauguration of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road (Japek) here on Thursday.
The head of state explained that in place of the nationwide exam, a minimum competency assessment for schools and teachers will be held.
Moreover, a character survey will be conducted to evaluate students.
"I think we should support what has been decided by the education minister," the president explained.
Each school would receive a certain grade, and the government will assist schools failing to meet the standard to improve their grade, he explained.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim had spoken of the government's plan to scrap the national exam and replace it with different type of educational assessment.
"In 2021, the national exam will be replaced with a minimum competency assessment and character survey," Makarim remarked.
He expounded that the minimum competency assessment referred to a test that will chiefly access students' literacy and numerical competence.
In the meantime, the survey of the students' character refers to a test based on teachers’ observations of their students’ behavior and outlook in accordance with values of the state ideology of Pancasila. Related news: Minister observes junior high school national exam implementation
