Twenty inmates have been named suspects. They are currently being questioned at the Tanah Karo Police Resort.Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - As many as 20 inmates were named suspects in connection with rioting that broke out at the Kabanjahe correctional facility in Karo District, North Sumatra Province, on Wednesday, Feb 12, 2020.
"A total of 20 inmates have been named suspects. They are currently being questioned at the Tanah Karo Police Resort," Chief of the Tanah Karo Police Resort Adjunct Senior Commissioner Benny Hutajulu confirmed on Thursday.
Hutajulu revealed that the police was yet conducting investigation into the rioting.
"The situation at the correctional facility has been conducive," he remarked.
Chief of the North Sumatra Provincial Police Inspector General Artuani Sormin stated that the convicts, named suspects in the rioting, were charged with violating article 170 of the Penal Code.
"Anybody committing violence against goods and human beings and destroying goods belonging to other people are charged with violating article 170," he stated.
The rioting broke out at around 12:00 WIB (West Indonesia Standard Time) on Wednesday, with some of the convicts being involved in arson and vandalism.
No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident. However, a total of 410 inmates were moved to other correctional facilities.
Most convicts were moved to correctional facilities in Medan, Humbahas, Sidikalang, and Binjai. Meanwhile, 142 convicts are yet under detention at the Kabanjahe Detention House since they have to stand trial.
