"The highest number of deaths of Indonesian nationals due to COVID-19 have been reported from the United States," said director of Protection of Indonesians and Indonesian Legal Assistance with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, during a virtual press conference held in Jakarta.
Of the total deaths, eight were recorded in the state of New York, while one was reported from a ship docked in Miami, Florida. The deceased patient was part of the crew on the Oasis of the Seas ship.
The Indonesian citizen, identified as I Putu Sugiartha, died on Monday (April 20, 2020) after undergoing medical treatment, the Miami Herald reported.
"The deceased had undergone treatment at a hospital in Florida, but could not be saved," Nugraha said.
As of April 22, 2020, 38 Indonesian nationals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the US. While two people have recovered, 27 are in stable condition, and nine others have died.
Based on the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' records, the US has the most COVID-19 infections in the world with 751,273 cases reported so far. (INE)
