Jambi (ANTARA) - A flood triggered by heavy rains swept through six villages in Batanghari District, Jambi Province, after Batanghari River overflowed its banks on Sunday.

The floodwater ranging from 30 centimeters to 100 centimeters deep inundated houses in the six villages, acting chief of the Batanghari District Disaster Mitigation Office Syar'i said here on Sunday.

"The flood was caused by high rainfalls, particularly in the upper reach of the river, causing the river water to overflow and inundate houses," he said.

BPBD officers have been deployed in several places to set up tents and prepare inflatable boats to anticipate the possibility of floodwater continuing to increase.

The six affected villages are Danau Embat in Maro Sebo Ilir Subdistrict , Benteng Rendah, Sungai Puar and Kembang Paseban in Mersam Sub-district, Pematang Lima Suku and Psar Muara Villages in Muara Tembesi Sub-district.

"Based on the depth of flood water, the six districts are still put under alert status for floods," he said.
