In my opinion, the president misses it (shaking hands and taking pictures with the community), but he understands the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemicJakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo yearns to again revert to the old ritual of shaking hands and taking photographs with the community though currently cannot be followed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presidential spokesperson Fadjroel Rachman made the statement during a discussion with ANTARA at the agency’s newsroom in Jakarta, Tuesday.
"In my opinion, the president misses it (shaking hands and taking pictures with the community), but he understands the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic," Rachman noted in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The presidential spokesperson pointed out that Widodo’s steps during the COVID-19 pandemic aimed at setting an example for the public without forgoing his old habits.
"Hence, the president continues to distribute staple food items, inspect the MRT station, and visit the mosque by implementing health protocols. The president followed the practice of undertaking blusukan (impromptu visit), greeting the public, and leading by example," Fadjroel pointed out.
Since January until now, the president was present at the palace by adhering to the health protocol.
"Although he suggested working from home, he has been present at the palace. I was also present at the palace by implementing the health protocol," he added.
