Now, imagine if we were to conduct intensification of the shrimp business, with high stock density of 200 shrimps per square meter, then the income would reach up to Rp500 million per year
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo drew attention to the promising potential of shrimp cultivation trade that he perceives can be more beneficial than businesses in other sectors.

"In the rubber plantation or palm oil business, the earnings reach around Rp15 million per hectare per year. Now, imagine if we were to conduct intensification of the shrimp business, with high stock density of 200 shrimps per square meter, then the income would reach up to Rp500 million per year," he noted in a statement received here, Wednesday.

In addition to the earnings, the cultivation sector can absorb a large workforce that aligns well with business development.

For instance, it takes about five people for cultivation of one hectare.

"If one hectare intensively employs five people, then several workers will be involved," he explained.

Prabowo also reiterated his commitment to facilitate the community, in terms of both licensing and access to capital. Currently, the government has been offering a people's business credit program (KUR) at an interest rate of six percent to businesses as collateral. The budget prepared for the program reached Rp195 trillion.

Furthermore, the Ministry has its own scheme for people keen on accessing business capital in the marine and fisheries sector. The program offers funding at an annual interest rate of three percent.

"These can all be accessed for the best interests of productive businesses. This is especially since the shrimp cultivation sector can be highly beneficial and bankable," he stated.

To achieve the target of boosting shrimp production, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will develop a model of shrimp cultivation in various regions.

This year, the ministry is targeting five development sites in East Aceh, Sukabumi, Sukamara, Buol, and South Lampung, as it is believed that this model can serve as a reference to be emulated by both investors and the community.
