The 637 fresh cases were higher than 601 cases reported on Saturday but lower than 641 cases on Friday (Aug 21) or 721 cases on Saturday (Aug 8), which was the highest surge since the COVID-19 pandemic announced for the first time in the country on March 2, 2020, Dwi Oktavia, head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of the Jakarta Health Service, noted here on Sunday.
The 637 additional cases came to light following the results of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests conducted on 6,255 specimens, she revealed.
"The total PCR test rate per one million population is 52,034. The number of people tested for PCR in the past week was 41,251," she stated.

Data of the Jakarta Health Service showed that as of Aug 22, the city's 54 laboratories had examined a total of 682,059 samples for PCR tests to trace COVID-19 transmission in five areas of Jakarta.
Currently, Jakarta's hospitals were treating a total of 8,962 COVID-19 patients.
The city had recorded a total of 23,567 recoveries. The death toll had reached 1,107.
Meanwhile, nationally, Indonesia, on Sunday (Aug 23) afternoon, witnessed the addition of 2,037 fresh COVID-19 cases, bringing the tally to 153,535 cases, and 2,302 new recoveries, with the total number of people recovering from the disease reaching 107,500. The death toll touched 6,680, including 86 COVID-19 patients succumbing to the novel coronavirus disease within the last 24 hours.
The country also recorded a total of 75,522 COVID-19 suspects. The number of specimens examined on Sunday (Aug 23) reached 22,152.
Confirmed COVID-19 cases were found in 485 districts and cities in the country's 34 provinces.
