Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned of extreme weather during the transition from dry to rainy seasons.

"During the transitional period, we need to stay alert for the likelihood of extreme weather, such as heavy rains in a short duration. (The rains) can be accompanied by flashes or lightening, strong winds, whirlwinds, and freezing rain," BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto noted in a written statement released on Tuesday.

The agency also projected most areas in Indonesia to enter the rainy season in late October or November 2020.

During the period between September and October 2020, several areas in the country will still witness the transitional period, from dry to rainy seasons.

The BMKG has forecast heavy rains accompanied by flashes and lightening in several parts of Indonesia in a week. On September 22-24, torrential rains are projected in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

Meanwhile, on September 25-28, heavy rains will likely lash Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.
