Jakarta (ANTARA) - Two people suffering gunshot wounds in a shooting attack on a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) probing the killing of two soldiers and two civilians in Intan Jaya, Papua, were flown to Jakarta, Saturday, for treatment.

"This morning, the TGPF member and TNI (Indonesian military) soldier, who sustained injuries in the attack on Friday evening, were flown to Jakarta for further treatment," Deputy Chief of the TGPF and Deputy for Laws and Human Rights to Coordinating Minister for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs Sugeng Purnomo noted in a press statement released on Saturday.

The TGPF member is identified as Bambang Purwoko, a lecturer and researcher of the Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM), while the TNI soldier is identified as First Sergeant Faisal Akbar from the Gorontalo district military command 1304.

They sustained gunshot wounds during a shooting attack when a group of TGPF members returned after investigating the scene of a shooting case in Intan Jaya District on Friday.

Purnomo revealed that the two victims were evacuated from Sugapa, Intan Jaya, to Timika aboard an Indonesian Air Force Caracal helicopter on Saturday morning. From Timika, they were flown to Jakarta aboard an Indonesian Air Force Boeing aircraft.

He stated that Purwoko’s leg had got injured, while Faisal was shot at in the waist area.

He highlighted the TGPF’s focus on evaluating all activities they had conducted while giving due emphasis to the safety and security of its members without deviating from its mission to secure clear information on the case.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, formed the TGPF early this month to probe the attacks in Intan Jaya District that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and two civilians.

The minister appointed day-to-day chief of the National Police Commission, Benny Mamoto, as chief of the fact-finding team and the ministry's deputy for legal and human rights coordination, Sugeng Purnomo, as the deputy chief.

“The team will be assigned for two weeks, starting the issuance of this decree. They will report the result (of the investigation) to the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs,” he remarked.

The team comprises 18 members, drawn from the Indonesian military, police, presidential staff office, and Papua social figures.

An armed civilian group in Hitadipa, Papua, had earlier reportedly shot dead two Indonesian military personnel, a civilian, and a priest.

The Indonesian military noted that the objective behind the shootings was to draw attention, especially prior to the United Nations General Assembly.
