Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - Mount Sinabung in Karo district of North Sumatra spewed a giant ash cloud on Thursday that spread up to 2 thousand meters in easterly and southeasterly directions, officials confirmed.

The volcano erupted on Thursday morning, shooting out a 1,500-meter-high column of ash, chief of Mount Sinabung's monitoring post, Amien Putra, said.

“The hot (ash) cloud was recorded on October 29, 2020 at 7.52 a.m., with a sliding distance of 2 thousand meters in easterly and southeasterly direction and a 1,500-meter-high column of ash," he stated.

Amien said he had warned local residents against entering the red zone, bearing in mind that the volcano is showing signs of high activity and can erupt anytime.

Residents have been asked to remain outside a 5-kilometer radius from the volcano's crater in the east and southeast and a 4-km radius in the northeast, he informed.

"Mount Sinabung is still under an alert status, so it will potentially erupt and spew (more) hot (ash) cloud,” Amien cautioned. (INE)
