Jakarta (ANTARA) - Online transportation services and their ecosystems have empowered many stakeholders, including their driver partners and MSME players, by helping them earn an income amid the pandemic, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment has said.

“This [role of online transport services] was very influential, especially during the implementation of the large-scale social restriction measures, when people started working from home (WFH). They also helped micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to continue selling and partners to continue earning an income during the pandemic,” Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said at a press conference held to mark 10 years of home-grown transportation startup Gojek on Thursday.

The minister lauded the company's innovations and achievements in the past decade, as well as the contributions it has made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said he hopes other start-ups and similar businesses developed by the nation's children will continue to further their development and innovation, enabling them to make more contributions towards community improvement, and even expand their endeavors at the international stage.

“Hopefully, in the future, (start ups and home-grown businesses) can continue to contribute a positive impact on the people of Indonesia, and not only succeed in their own country, but also internationally," Pandjaitan remarked.

Indonesian technology company, Gojek, marked its 10-year milestone on Thursday. Gojek co-CEO Kevin Aluwi said he hopes the company will continue to contribute to the Indonesian economy through its ecosystem.

Research from the Demographic Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia, has found that the Gojek ecosystem's contribution to the Indonesian economy has reached Rp104.7 trillion, he pointed out.

This achievement has been driven, among others, by investments that were focused on a number of strategic areas, such as product and service innovation, automation, which has succeeded in increasing the efficiency and quality of performance of applications, including the GoBiz self-serve onboarding and CareTech ticket automation, as well as investments in human resources and technology, he explained.

He further said the company will continue to encourage such growth by focusing on investment in several key areas in 2021, starting from digitizing MSMEs in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, to infrastructure and integration of the Gojek platform globally.

"With a commitment to continue to provide opportunities for a better life through technology, and focus on business efficiency, we will continue to create a positive impact on our ecosystem and contribute to the economies of Indonesia and Southeast Asia in the years to come," Aluwi remarked.
