Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is installing digital accelerographs at five different locations in North Sumatra Province to gauge ground acceleration produced by earthquakes.

The installation of digital accelerographs is a follow-up to a survey conducted in July 2020, Head of the Deli Serdang Geophysics Station Teguh Rahayu stated here on Friday.

"(The digital accelerographs) have been installed at the BPBD (Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency) Office in Binjai City and the BPBD Office in Karo District," he noted.

The objective behind installing digital accelerographs is to make buildings less prone to the impacts of earthquakes in the area, he remarked.

A digital accelerograph is an instrument to record ground acceleration induced by a powerful land shock or earthquake.

"In North Sumatra, the digital instrument will be installed at five different places of the BPBD Office in Binjai City, BPBD Office in Karo District, BPBD Office in Pematang Siantar City, BPBD Office in Asahan District, and BPBD Office in South Tapanuli District," he remarked.

The digital accelerograph comprises two parts, with each being installed outdoors and inside the building.

The maximum distance between the accelerograph sensor and supporting equipment is 80 meters.

The accelerograph sensor must be placed at a location outdoors that is free from flooding.
