Purwokerto, C Java (ANTARA) - Floods, resulting from the overflowing of Serayu River, inundated several villages in five sub-districts in Banyumas District, Central Java, Titik Puji Astuti, head of the Banyumas Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), stated.

"Many areas have been flooded, especially those along the banks of Serayu River. We are still collecting data," she revealed here on Thursday.

Astuti confirmed that the sub-districts of Kalibagor, Somagede, Patikraja, Rawalo, and Kembaran were affected by the flooding. Consequently, several flood victims had to flee to higher ground.

Flooding in Kembaran Sub-district was caused by the overflowing of Pelus River, which is a tributary of Serayu River.

The floodwaters reached heights of between 30 centimeters and one meter, she noted.

Two bridges respectively in the sub-districts of Kembaran and Purojati collapsed owing to flooding.

Landslides also hit several areas in Banyumas, including in Gumelar Sub-district.

Narsito, 40, a resident of Pegalongan Village, Patikraja Sub-district, recalled that the flooding was triggered by incessant heavy rains that had fallen since Wednesday at around 7 p.m. local time until Thursday.

"The waters began to rise at 3 a.m. local time and swamp roads at dawn," he added. Related news: Three missing, two dead as flooding, landslides hit Banyumas
