Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is finalizing steps to impose limited territorial quarantine to thwart a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases that currently reach over one million.

The limited territorial quarantine will be imposed up to the micro level, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy noted during a press statement released on Wednesday.

"Particularly at the upstream level, the step (will be taken) to impose limited (territorial) quarantine, and (the next step) includes tracing, tracking, and testing. Of course, (the step also covers) health protocols and treatment of COVID-19 patients," he noted.

The minister remarked that President Joko Widodo had instructed the ministers concerned to amend their strategies and approaches to curb the spread of COVID-19 and impose limited territorial quarantine up to the level of the neighborhood association and community unit.

The government is in the process of discussing the technical implementation of limited territorial quarantine, he stated.

"We will continue to make arrangements to that end. Actually, the president has ordered (his staff) to impose limited (territorial) quarantine seriously and apply the self-isolation scheme. If it is impossible, centered collective isolation should be offered," he revealed.

Law No. 6 of 2018 on health quarantine stipulates that quarantine is imposed on all residents of an area if the result of laboratory test indicates the spread of a communicable disease in the area.

If the area is quarantined, then quarantine officials will place a quarantine line in the area. Quarantine officers and police personnel will supervise outside the quarantined area.
