"Throughout 2020, the Ministry has taken down 2,859 items of content that violate intellectual property (rights). In 2021, in just over a month, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has consistently cut off access to 360 items of content that violate intellectual property (rights), including copyright infringement," said Minister of Communication and Informatics, Johnny G Plate, at the National Mass Media Convention held to commemorate the 2021 National Press Day on Monday.
Apart from handling content in the downstream sector, the ministry also came across negative content and, with the help of the National Police's Criminal Unit, enforced the law against creators and spreaders of false news or hoaxes.
This time around, the law enforcement movement in the digital space went hand in hand together with law enforcement by the National Police's Crime Unit in the physical space, Minister Plate said.
"At a time when these two institutions are working hand in hand and are strongly supported by the media and the press, we hope that our digital space will be cleaner, our digital space will be filled with better and more useful media competitions that are getting better and more useful," the minister stated.
The Ministry of Communication and Informatics is also making sustainable efforts to create regulations that support the media industry ecosystem, he added.
The ministry has currently enforced several laws, one of which is Law Number 11 of 2020. The passing of this law has accelerated the process of digitizing media, including that of broadcasting, the minister pointed out.
Specifically for digital broadcasts, and more technically, through encryption technology in digital broadcasting, content will be increasingly protected from attempts to broadcast without rights as well as violations of other content reproductive rights that are often experienced by media practitioners, he said.
"As an effort to mitigate media copyright infringement in the digital realm, Indonesia also has regulations on the handling of digital content through Law No.19 of 2016 regarding electronic information and transactions," he said.
In addition, the ministry has issued Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 on the implementation of an electronic transaction system, or PSTE, which has received a lot of response globally and the Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning the implementation of an electronic system in a private sphere to protect content, he added.
