"If there are residents taking refuge in temporary shelters, they are being provided with special tents equipped with rooms," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said during a webinar organized by the Indonesian Cyber Community Network here on Monday.
He then urged Jakartans to continue practicing the government's health protocols, such as wearing face masks, washing hands, and maintaining physical distancing at all times.
"The point is that please reduce mobility and direct interaction," he said.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the heavy rainfall in the capital city has led to several areas in East Jakarta and South Jakarta getting inundated by floodwaters.
At least 42 community units (RW) and 150 neighborhood units (RT) have been affected by the flooding, while the total number of neighborhood units in Jakarta has been recorded at 30,470, according to the BPBD.
On Monday morning, owing to the overflowing of the Ciliwung River, the Gunung Sahari Raya road section in Pademangan sub-district, North Jakarta, was submerged by floodwaters measuring 15 centimeters in height so motorists and car drivers could still cross the road.
Head of Pademangan sub-district’s Water Resources Unit, Slamet Riyanto, said his men had been deployed since early morning to pump out standing water and prevent Ciliwung River from overflowing by installing 500 sand bags.
As part of the capital city's flood prevention measures, the Jakarta Water Department's river troops on Monday removed 436 cubic meters of garbage from the Manggarai sluice gate, Kampung Melayu Bridge, and the Season City West Flood Canal.
"Some 260 cubic meters of garbage was collected from the Manggarai sluice gate in Menteng sub-district, Central Jakarta," said Efron Firdaus, a member of the Jakarta Water Department's Rainy Season Task Force, here on Monday.
About 144 cubic meters of garbage was collected from the Season City West Flood Canal in Tambora, West Jakarta, and 32 cubic meters of garbage was collected from the Kampung Melayu Bridge in East Jakarta, he added.
The garbage that was stuck at the Kampung Melayu Bridge in Jatinegara sub-district was carried away by the Ciliwung River's currents, he said adding, most of the trash collected comprised twigs, plants, and household waste. (INE)
