The port, with direct connectivity to the toll road, will significantly contribute to economic growth in Sumatra Island, specifically in Bengkulu Province.
"Surely, we have to support it and manage the surrounding area to support its operation, so it can serve as a gate for national exports and imports," Mersyah stated here on Saturday.
According to Mersyah, development of the port can be accelerated through various forms of cooperation with the Bengkulu provincial government and other related institutions.
Bengkulu's region-owned enterprise PD Bimex has worked in cooperation with PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok on port service operation.
PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II in Bengkulu has forged cooperation with PT Agro Mega Perkasa for usage of land at the Baai Island Port area for kernel processing.
Mersyah remarked that the two forms of cooperation are in accordance with the government’s program to develop the sea toll and Special Economic Zone (KEK).
"Both forms of cooperation will be highly productive and will be in line with the policy of the Bengkulu administration, with the port serving as an economic driver for Bengkulu and the western part of Sumatra," he remarked.
President Director of PD Bimex Frentindo stated that under the cooperation, the company will partake in the port service business that was linked closely to other sectors, such as mining, plantation, and general trading.
