The total number of laid off workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Aceh reaches more than 4,000
Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - More than 4,000 people in Aceh have lost jobs since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in Indonesia in March 2020, Chief of the Aceh Labor Alliance Saiful Mar said.

"The total number of laid off workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Aceh reaches more than 4,000," he said in Banda Aceh on Saturday.

Most of the workers were employed in hotels, mining companies and service companies before they were laid off, he said.

"Hotels contributed most to the number laid-off workers, reaching up to 800," he said.

The hotel workers were not laid off but were forced to take unpaid leave. However, the hotels where they used to work have recruited other workers, he said.

On the occasion, Saiful appealed to the Aceh governor to revise regional regulation (qanun) number 7 of 2014 on manpower to adjust to the Job Creation Law.

"The Aceh government must also apply provincial minimum wage in accordance with the specified amount," he said.

He further expressed gratitude to companies which do not lay off workers despite the pandemic.
