"Referring to BBI Day held on December 11-12, 2020, wherein we booked transactions totaling Rp11.6 trillion, the government has projected that during this year's event, we can at least book transactions of the same amount. Moreover, the period of the event is longer than that of the previous year," Director General of Domestic Trade of the Trade Ministry Oke Nurwan stated here on Wednesday.
The government has set May 5 as BBI Day in a bid to boost the sales of micro-, small-, and medium-scale enterprises (MSME) and rev up Indonesia’s economic growth.
E-commerce platforms, including Tokopedia, Blibli, Lazada, Bukalapak, and Shopee, will offer various promos to their customers to celebrate BBI Day.
Nurwan remarked that at a meeting with related ministries and institutions and e-commerce platforms, the ministry concurred on changing National Online Shopping Day 2021 to BBI Day 2021, under the theme of "Increasingly Proud of Indonesian Products".
Firstly, Nurwan highlighted the government’s plan to offer free delivery as subsidy during BBI Day 2021, but e-commerce platforms have already provided the free-delivery service to celebrate Eid al-Fitr amid the mudik ban.
"The government has played its role to drive the campaign through various media, while business operators have offered varied promotions, such as free delivery, to attract consumers," he pointed out.
Nurwan highlighted the importance of the event for Indonesia to usher in recovery of the economy battered by the COVID-19 pandemic, and online shopping has emerged as a solution.
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that domestic consumption had contributed some 60 percent to the national economic growth.
