The step is important as part of the international responsibility to play a role in creating global peace and security.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), has condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestinian worshippers in Al Aqsa Mosque complex, and urged the government to promptly take diplomatic action to address the problem.
"The step is important as part of the international responsibility to play a role in creating global peace and security," Secretary General of the NU Executive Board Helmy Faishal Zaini noted in a written statement released on Monday.
The NU denounced the attack on Palestinian worshipers at the mosque. Moreover, the attack took place during the holy month of Ramadhan.
Zaini described the attack as a heinous act that has hurt human values.
"The NU executive board strongly denounced the Israeli police's attack on Palestinian civilians," he affirmed.
According to Al Jazeera, over 170 Palestinians suffered injuries after the Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque and dispersed worshippers elsewhere in occupied East Jerusalem.
In addition to urging the Indonesian government to take diplomatic action, the NU executive board also called on the United Nations to immediately respond to the incident.
"We urge the UN to take accurate steps and make strategic efforts to ensure that peace is returned to Palestine and that it will become a sovereign state recognized by all countries," he stated.
Since the start, the NU Executive Board has supported the Palestinian independence and sovereignty as decided at NU's 13th congress held in Banten in 1938.
