The number of patients decreased, from 929 to 900, after 29 patients were discharged after having fully recovered
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Some 900 COVID-19 patients are still hospitalized at Jakarta’s Wisma Atlet Kemayoran emergency hospital on Tuesday amid public concerns over a potential spike in new confirmed cases following the Eid al-Fitr holiday season.

"The number of patients decreased, from 929 to 900, after 29 patients were discharged after having fully recovered," Joint Defense Area Command I (Kogabwilhan I) spokesman Colonel Aris Mudian stated here on Tuesday.

The hospitalized patients are occupying 900 beds at Towers 4, 5, 6, and 7. The emergency hospital still has 5,094 vacant beds in the four towers, he remarked, adding that the hospital had treated 83,356 patients from March 23, 2020, to May 18, 2021.

Of the 83,356 registered patients, 81,521 had fully recovered from the novel coronavirus disease, while 848 others were sent to other hospitals, while 87 succumbed to this deadly virus, he remarked.

Meanwhile, as of Tuesday, 2,298 patients were hospitalized at the Wisma Atlet Pademangan emergency hospital. They occupy beds in Towers 8, 9, and 10, he revealed.

The novel coronavirus disease outbreak initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 and thereafter spread to various parts of the world, including countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Indonesian government announced the country's first confirmed cases on March 2, 2020.

Since then, the central and regional governments have made persistent efforts to flatten the coronavirus curve by imposing healthcare protocols and social restrictions.

To break the chain of transmission of COVID-19, which has impacted the purchasing power of scores of families in Indonesia, the government banned homebound travel, or "mudik," ahead of this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday season akin to last year.

Residents of Jakarta returning home after celebrating the Eid al-Fitr festivity in their hometowns outside the capital city must possess COVID-19-free certificates.

"Jakarta's residents must show the results of rapid COVID-19 antigen tests that they have undergone in their hometowns," Jakarta Police spokesman Sen. Com. Yusri Yunus stated.

Police officers began checking the COVID-19-free certificates of travelers heading to Jakarta on Sunday, according to Yunus.

Amid the government's ongoing vaccination program, Chief of the Committee for COVID-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery (KPC-PEN) Airlangga Hartarto informed that 15 provinces, most of them located in Sumatra, have reported a rise in active coronavirus cases.

"However, if we look at (the data), the weekly cases in Sumatra Island are showing an upward trend compared to the first week of April (2021)," Hartarto, concurrently coordinating minister for economic affairs, noted in an official statement released early this week.

The 15 provinces with rising infections are Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bangka Belitung, Jakarta, Maluku, Banten, West Nusa Tenggara, North Maluku, Central Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and Gorontalo.

In response to the spike in active cases, the government will continue to bolster surveillance of people moving from one area to another, especially after the Eid al-Fitr festivity, Hartarto stated.
