Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan embarked on a work visit to South Korea to intensify economic cooperation between both nations in varied fields, particularly to boost investment in the pharmaceutical industry and green energy.

Coordinating Minister Pandjaitan paid a working visit on May 24-25, 2021, in the company of Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin and Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Kartika Wirjoatmodjo.

"For two days, we met several South Korean companies, such as Hyundai, LG Energy Solution, SK, and others, which are also committed to eco-friendliness and reducing carbon emissions. I am very pleased that South Korean companies will also invest in environmentally friendly fields to help achieve the target of reducing carbon emissions," the minister noted in a written statement in Jakarta, Friday.

On the first day of the work visit, Pandjaitan and his delegation held a series of meetings with several South Korean company leaders, including CEO of LG Energy Solution Jong Hyun Kim, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Banks Kim Gwang-soo, Vice Chairman/CEO of SK E&S Co Ltd Jeong Joon Yu, and the pharmaceutical company Sungwun Pharmacopia.

During a meeting with LG Energy Solution CEO Jong Hyun Kim, Pandjaitan discussed investment in the field of electric vehicle batteries. The LG Consortium has inked an initial agreement virtually on April 29, 2021.

Furthermore, Pandjaitan met with Chairman of the Korea Federation of Banks, Kim Gwang-soo, to discuss investment in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), which is the government's commitment to attracting investment to help infrastructure development.

This was followed by a meeting with Pharmacopia to invite the pharmaceutical company to increase investment in the development of medicinal raw materials, or Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), in Indonesia through collaboration with Kimia Farma.

In addition, the Indonesian delegation visited the Hyundai Motorstudio and thereafter held a meeting with President & CEO of Hyundai Youngjoon Yoon. Hyundai is a company with an important role in the energy transition process through the utilization of hydrogen energy.

On the second day of the work visit (May 25), Pandjaitan met with Vice Chairman and CEO of Celltrion Healthcare Hyoung Ki Kim to discuss vaccine development between Genexine and PT Kalbe Farma.

Moreover, the Indonesian delegation met with Samsung Electronics' management to discuss Samsung's investment potential in Indonesia. The agenda for the day was closed with a meeting with Kim Yong Jin of the National Pension Service of Korea.

Pandjaitan’s working visit to South Korea this time carries a mission to boost Indonesia's commitment to achieving the target of reducing carbon emissions. Hence, the Indonesian delegation also met with South Korean Environment Minister Han Jeoung-ae to discuss cooperation to bolster resilience to climate change and the economics of carbon pricing.

Pandjaitan also focused on ensuring points pertaining to technology transfer in any investment that will enter Indonesia.

This is one of the five criteria that foreign investors should fulfill for investing in Indonesia. Other criteria are bringing environmentally friendly technology, using local Indonesian labor, creating added value, and business-to-business (B2B) cooperation.
