Jakarta (ANTARA) - The smart city concept can be used to address various urban challenges amid the changing dynamics, according to Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

"At the moment, (the concept) of smart city has become one of the concepts used to address many urban challenges," Amin stated at the 2021 Smart City and Digital Transformation Rating and Research event held virtually on Monday.

The vice president believed that the smart city concept, featuring digital transformation in development, can also elevate the quality of life of urban residents.

To this end, Vice President Amin reiterated the government's support for implementing the concept at city government levels.

"Through the smart city program, the government continues to strive to sustainably improve the people's quality of life until 2050," he said.

The government is also encouraging all universities to boost their research activities on digital transformation and smart cities to then be implemented by city-level governments.

"This can then be utilized to determine the directions and goals of city developments in order to ensure that the city grows in accordance with the people's needs and available resources," he stated.

The VP then lauded the Bandung Institute of Technology for having initiated a research on development of the Garuda Smart City Framework that illustrates indicators to transform into a smart city.

"I am optimistic that the city governments would benefit from this research to improve their performance and the quality of cities in line with the people’s aspirations," he stated.
