Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - State-owned tin company PT Timah Tbk handed out 2,500 free masks to residents in Pangkalpinang City, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

"This is the company's endeavor to help the government to urge the people to remain disciplined in implementing health protocols," Head of the Communication Division of PT Timah Tbk Anggi Siahaan stated in Pangkalpinang on Wednesday.

Siahaan noted that PT Timah Tbk had hosted the #Ayo Pakai Master event, during which they handed out 2,500 masks for free in populated areas, such as in Pasar Pagi Pangkalpinang City, food stalls, and PT Timah Tbk offices, to reduce and stem the spread of the coronavirus disease.

"We are optimistic that with this giveaway of free masks, the people would exercise greater discipline, as they follow the 5M health protocols encompassing wearing mask, washing hands, maintaining social distancing, avoiding crowd, and reducing mobility to suppress the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases," she affirmed.

She noted that the distribution of free masks was aimed at expanding reach, so that the community living by PT Timah Tbk could also receive them. Such measure was expected to raise public awareness.

"By handing out free masks, we urge the people to follow health protocols along with maintaining discipline. Although it is simple, wearing masks has a significant impact on stemming the spread of COVID-19," she stated.

Since the pandemic struck last year, PT Timah Tbk had given away tens of thousands free masks to the public living near the office block. Doubling as an effort to also drive the economy, the masks were created by SMEs.

"PT Timah Tbk also allocated hundreds of portable sinks at public places to make it easier for people to wash hands in public," she pointed out.
