Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - Nutritionist at Gadjah Mada University, Aviria Ermamilia, has suggested the intake of high-calorie and protein-rich foods for COVID-19 patients undergoing self-isolation.

"We recommend self-isolating patients to consume high-calorie and high-protein foods because when someone gets infected, he/she requires higher levels of energy and protein than usual," Ermamilia noted in a written statement here on Wednesday.

The nutritionist emphasized that self-isolating patients should eat a variety of foods with an attempt to achieve balanced nutrition since no single type of food has complete nutritional content.

In addition, the bodily needs of vitamins and minerals must be met and also more fruits and vegetables must be consumed.

The lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Health also appealed to self-isolating patients to avoid food and beverages laden with sugar, salt, and fat.

Apart from the risk of inflammation, the intake of foods containing excess sugar, salt, and fat can also trigger the emergence of other diseases.

Ermamilia explained that daily sugar consumption should not cross four tablespoons, while salt intake per day should be restricted to four teaspoons and fat intake to five tablespoons per day.

"It would be better for self-isolating patients to avoid food or beverages containing excess amounts of sugar, salt, and fat, such as fried foods, fast food, and packaged foods. They should eat a variety of foods with an attempt to achieve balanced nutrition," she explained.
