Jakarta (ANTARA) - Mothers and fathers both have an equal responsibility and role in raising their children, assistant deputy at the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Prijadi Santoso, has said.

"As stated in Law Number 52 of 2009 concerning Population Development and Family Development, there is an expanded definition of parenting -- parenting is not only done by mother, but is a shared responsibility," he said during an online discussion on Thursday.

"This (regulation) also responds to roles and provides space for both men and women to provide equal access and control," he added.

Other than parents, the surrounding environment or community, such as neighbors and the child's friends, also play a huge role in the healthy development of the child, he observed.

According to him, parenting and gender equality are topics that should be discussed more often.

Santoso said that during the G20 Summit, which will be held in Bali next year, a G20 Empower forum would be held to identify challenges to and support the advancement of women's leadership in the private sector.

Furthermore, the PPPA Ministry has also identified at least 36 indicators related to the protection of children and women, based on research, Santoso said. These include issues regarding children's rights, he elaborated.

To support the protection of children and women, government intervention also continues to be intensified through various parties, related ministries, and institutions, he informed.

"We have also collaborated with the Ministry of Villages to establish Women-Friendly and Care for Children villages. This is as a follow-up to the President's directives regarding caring for children, prevention of child marriage, and child labor," he added. (
