Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - South Sulawesi's COVID-19 Handling Task Force Head Consultant Ridwan Amiruddin attributed low vaccination coverage in the province to the slow distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

"Cities and districts' authorities in the province are all eager to hold vaccination drives in their region, yet we have no stocks available owing to slow distribution," Amiruddin stated in Makassar, South Sulawesi, yesterday.

Amiruddin drew attention to the high level of enthusiasm among South Sulawesi’s residents regarding vaccination, as they were seen thronging vaccination points whenever drives hosted by government or private institutions were held.

"Our problem at present is the slow distribution, and this means the central government supplies are inadequate. I suggest the government to maximize efforts to ensure adequate vaccine supplies," Amiruddin remarked.

The head consultant also sought the public’s support to eradicate COVID-19 by getting the vaccine jab and the government’s support by ensuring vaccine procurement and supplies for the region.

"If we really want to be free from the pandemic, we should strive to achieve the ideal vaccination coverage rate of 70 percent. To achieve the ideal rate, we still need more vaccines for 182 million residents nationwide," Amiruddin stated.

Earlier, the province Health Office's Disease Control and Prevention department head Muhammad Madong stated that South Sulawesi had exhausted all vaccine supplies for distribution to cities and districts.

"I ensure that the regions' vaccine supply would be adequate. Despite our vaccine warehouse being empty, new vaccines stocks are en route and would arrive soon, so we can replenish our stocks," Madong expounded.

As of August 10, South Sulawesi recorded that around 7,057,525 residents, or around 20.80 percent of the total population, had received the first vaccine dosage, and 785,588 residents, or 11.13 percent of the total population, had been administered the second vaccine jab.
