Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia nominated itself to become a member of the Postal Operations Council (POC) at the 27th Universal Postal Congress based on performance of the postal sector that clocked a 10.34-percent year-on-year growth in 2019.

IIsmail , Post and Informatics Director General, the Communication and Informatics Ministry, in a press statement quoted here on Thursday, sought congress members' support for Indonesia's nomination.

In addition to the 10.34-percent year-on-year growth of the postal sector, revenue in the first semester of 2019 also climbed by 30 percent year-on-year as compared to that in 2018.

Ever since the pandemic struck, the government has pushed for utilizing digital technology in postal services, Ismail noted.

He attributes this growth to increased e-commerce and electronic transactions.

"I think we all agree that digital transformation has accelerated the global postal supply chain and boosted customer satisfaction, experience, and trust toward global postal services," Ismail noted.

However, the postal sector still reels from numerous challenges during the pandemic, such as mobility restriction, suspension of transportation options, and flight cancellations, which have disrupted the global postal supply chain.

Ismail noted that the postal sector faced other problems, such as suspension of cross-border postal delivery, extension of handling and delivery time, increase in the number of unsent or returned mails, and the closing of half of the post offices due to the spread of COVID-19.

"All these factors have undeniably put high pressure on the global postal supply chain and postal network that have reduced the volume of postal delivery and the quality of postal services," he pointed out.

To this end, the postal sector should apply new holistic management and streamline business processes through digital transformation in order to enhance the quality and quantity of postal services.
