Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has said it is making strategic attempts to improve maritime, marine, and fisheries management, in accordance with the National Mid-Term Development Plan 2020-2024.

The strategies comprise implementing the 14th sustainable development goal (SDG); strengthening the database; and, improving human resources, technology innovation, and marine research quality, Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, said.

He made the statement during a virtual public lecture for new students of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Friday.

According to Trenggono, the ministry and its partners are also continuing to develop Indonesia's fisheries potential through utilization, monitoring, and conservation attempts by implementing three breakthrough programs.

The programs comprise increasing non-tax state revenues from the capture fishery sectors to improve fishermen's welfare, advancing aquaculture supported by marine and fishery research to boost export value, and developing fishing villages based on local wisdom, he informed.

The ministry will also make efforts to improve fishery productivity by implementing the controlled fishing and aquaculture policy as well as maintaining the coastal ecosystem, Trenggono said.

Quality human resources are crucial for the programs' success, he added.

"Hence, I invite the academic community of Hasanuddin University to collaborate in overseeing the implementation of the policies among the fishery communities," he added.

At the lecture, the faculty dean, Dr. Ir. St. Aisjah Farhum, MSi, said students’ participation is important for supporting the implementation of the 14th SDG -- Life Below Water – which aims to encourage community welfare through sustainable marine and fishery exploration activities.
