BRIN will focus on research to support the digital economy, green economy, and blue economy based on the country’s local natural resources, biodiversity, geographical aspects, and cultural arts.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) stated that the 76th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence is marked by a milestone in the nation's research and innovation through the establishment of BRIN.

"This year's Indonesian independence anniversary is very special for BRIN, as it is the first year of the formation of BRIN, wherein we expect to make major changes in the management of Indonesia's research and innovation ecosystem. This year is a milestone of Indonesian research and innovation," Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, stated when contacted by ANTARA here on Tuesday.

Hence, Handoko noted that BRIN, formed on April 28, 2021, must be able to fulfill the mandated goals, which is the immediate execution of the integration of research and development agencies at the ministerial and institutional level.

Moreover, the BRIN head remarked that with the integration of research resources, it is able to become a facilitator and tool for all stakeholders to enter into research activities without large investments but with minimal risks.

According to Handoko, research is the key to Indonesia's successful economic future in becoming a developed nation and getting beyond the middle-income status.

To this end, he echoed BRIN’s readiness to be the main lever in supporting an increase in added value in various research-based goods and services.

He invited the entire Indonesian research community to jointly improve the research ecosystem in Indonesia, which is far from ideal, and still struggling with the problem of low critical mass related to research resources that are quality human resources, infrastructure, and budget.

"We must be brave to look to the future without being burdened by the past and to manifest major changes to enhance the research capacity and competence in Indonesia to produce many inventions and innovations that are globally competitive," Handoko stressed.

In line with President Jokowi’s directive, BRIN will focus on research to support the digital economy, green economy, and blue economy based on the country’s local natural resources, biodiversity, geographical aspects, and cultural arts.

Thus, Handoko remarked that by creating research-based innovations and utilizing local natural resources, Indonesia will be able to compete and seize opportunities at the global level.
