We are optimistic of achieving the target since before the operational handover, we have prepared the rig, materials, and competent operators required to complete the task
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan, operator of the newly acquired Rokan Block in Riau Province, is upbeat about achieving the 2021 target of drilling 161 new oil wells.

"We are optimistic of achieving the target since before the operational handover, we have prepared the rig, materials, and competent operators required to complete the task," Pertamina Hulu Rokan General Director Jaffee Arizon Suardin remarked.

Since the handover from the previous operator PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia on Aug 9, Pertamina has drilled six new oil wells in the block. Taking into account four wells drilled earlier during the transition period, Pertamina currently has 10 new oil wells operational in the block, Suardin noted.

"Earlier, we needed 20 days to complete the work, but our new efficient method successfully reduces the time to 11 days. Other projects that were expected to be completed within seven days are now ready in five," he pointed out.

Citing the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's data, Rokan Block, as a strategic national oil producer, has produced more than 11 billion oil barrels from 1951 until 2021. Rokan Block is the second-largest oil and natural gas field nationwide, with a total area of 6,453 square kilometers. The block is divided into 10 fields.

The block’s average oil production reached 160.5 thousand barrels per day, or equivalent to 24 percent of the daily national output, while natural gas production at the same block had reached 41 million cubic feet per day.

To boost oil and gas production at the block, Pertamina has targeted to drill 161 new oil wells by the end of the year and to drill 500 new wells in 2022. Drilling of new wells is supported by 16 drilling rigs and 29 rigs for work-over and well service, reflecting the earlier operation contract with Chevron.
