Are we going to destroy our unity in Indonesia due to the situation in Afghanistan? I do not think that needs to happen
Jakarta (ANTARA) - International Law expert from the University of Indonesia (UI) Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana appealed to all Indonesians to not become divided over the conflict in Afghanistan.

"Are we going to destroy our unity in Indonesia due to the situation in Afghanistan? I do not think that needs to happen," Juwana stated when contacted by ANTARA here on Saturday.

The UI law expert reminded and urged people to not get involved in gathering sympathizers over the conflict between the Afghan government and Taliban, as such efforts could be self-defeating.

Most importantly, the possibility of support from Indonesians for the warring groups in Afghanistan will not have a direct impact on the country.

Moreover, not all parties are truly aware of what the real problem is in Afghanistan.

Several reports suggested people had fled through airports and border areas just to get out of the country. Moreover, the Taliban group had shown resistance.

"Do not let problems abroad affect and even harm unity in our country, as these issues have no relevance," according to Juwana.

He believes that Indonesians do not need to intervene in Afghanistan’s internal affairs since the country has sovereignty that must be respected by all parties.

Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Commissioner General of Police Boy Rafli Amar had earlier appealed to the entire community to be prudent in responding to news related to the conflict in Afghanistan.

He suspects that the conflict had prompted certain groups to gather sympathizers.

"Hence, we must be careful in responding to the situation in Afghanistan that has been hit by prolonged conflict. Do not let the community mis sympathize, as based on our monitoring, certain parties are trying to rally sympathizers on the Taliban issue. We are currently observing it," Amar affirmed.
