We deem diversity as one of the most fundamental aspects in establishing balance and development in Indonesia's SOEs
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice Minister II for State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Kartika Wirjoatmodjo on Wednesday emphasized the importance of gender and age diversity among the leadership of SOEs for the advancement of the enterprises.

One of the goals for the development of talent under the corporate long-term plan framework (RJPP) is establishing diversity in SOE leadership, Wirjoatmodjo, who is also known as Tiko, said.

"We deem diversity as one of the most fundamental aspects in establishing balance and development in Indonesia's SOEs," he remarked during an online seminar here on Wednesday.

There are two kinds of diversity -- gender diversity and age diversity, he said.

In terms of gender diversity, the SOEs Ministry is hoping to see women SOE leaders grow and develop, considering they are still few in number at the moment, he added.

The vice minister attributed this to the fact that SOEs grew in a more masculine culture in the past, especially in heavy sectors driven by engineering skills and disciplines such as electricity and telecommunication.

However, progress is happening, such as with the development of a more feminine and consumer-oriented management in the banking sector over the last 5-10 years, he pointed out.

In terms of age, SOEs are characterized by leaders over the age of 50, he noted.

However, the SOEs Ministry has managed to gradually lower the age standard to the point where it is possible for SOE leaders to be 50 or even 40 years old, he said.

The vice minister underlined the importance of this fact, saying the old BUMN leaders would not be able to understand the millennial consumers' world and keep up with Industrial Revolution 4.0.
