Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - Police are still investigating a crime scene related to a fire that erupted in the Class 1 Prison of Tangerang, Banten, which resulted in the deaths of 41 inmates.

According to information received by ANTARA at the scene, the fire broke out in block C of the Tangerang Class I Prison at 1:45 local time, Wednesday morning. The fire was reportedly caused by an electrical short circuit.

Some of those injured were offered treatment by the Tangerang Class 1 prison's medical team, while the severely injured victims were taken to the Tangerang Regional Hospital.

Strict security was enforced by a joint apparatus of the police, TNI, and internal officers of the Tangerang Class 1 prison.

Earlier, the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) had confirmed that the Class I Prison in Tangerang, Banten Province, got engulfed in fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

"We do not know the details of when the incident occurred, but the information is clear that the fire has been extinguished," Tubagus Erif Faturahman, spokesperson for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, informed when contacted here on Wednesday.

However, Faturahman noted that no definite information was yet available regarding the cause of the Tangerang Class I prison fire.

"Details of the incident, such as when it occurred, the cause, impact of damage and losses, and casualties, will be conveyed later," he stated.
