Research and innovation are essential as the basis of the efforts to accelerate disaster risk reduction in Indonesia
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Research and innovation are essential to accelerate reduction of disaster risks in Indonesia, Secretary for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lilik Kurniawan stated.

“Research and innovation are essential as the basis of the efforts to accelerate disaster risk reduction in Indonesia," Kurniawan stated during the Talk to Scientists: Research and Innovation for Disaster-Resilient Indonesia seminar here, Thursday.

Kurniawan remarked that science and technology are part of the principles in disaster mitigation in accordance with Law No. 24 of 2007.

The secretary noted that activities conducted by the related ministry or institution in mitigating disasters had demonstrated the research efforts on disasters made by experts, researchers in various research institutions, and those in universities.

However, he gauged that planning, implementation, and documentation of the results pertaining to research had not been well-coordinated. Hence, it is important to coordinate them through strong synergy and collaboration between stakeholders to achieve a disaster-resilient Indonesia.

Kurniawan believes that research and innovation are strengths in the disaster mitigation efforts that can be made through multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration and the involvement of various research organizations and fields of science: remote sensing technology, assessment and application of technology, earth sciences, also humanities and social aspects.

All cross-disciplines and research organizations will offer inputs backed by research results for the understanding and detection of potential disasters in Indonesia, required mitigation efforts, use of technology, and research that strengthens the mitigation and reduction of disaster risks and impacts of the disaster.

Kurniawan also pressed to boost public awareness on the importance of regulations and actions that are based on research, technology, and innovation in the efforts to reduce disaster risks.

“We are also supporting Indonesia to become more resilient in facing the threat of disasters," he remarked.
