This record-breaking is also Susanti's second gold for West Java in PON
Papua (ANTARA) - West Java lifter Susi Susanti has broken the Asian record for deadlift by successfully lifting a total of 197.5kg in the women's 52-kg class at the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in Jayapura, Papua on Monday.

The previous deadlift record was held by China's Chou Yi Ju, who lifted a total of 192.5kg.

"My key in winning is to take training seriously and stay focused during the match," Susanti said.

The 28-year-old managed to collect a total of 540kg (207.5kg squat, 137.5kg bench press, and 195kg deadlift) to bag the gold medal at this year's Papua PON.

Riau's Rostiana lifted a total of 460kg to bag the silver medal.

Initially, Susanti's squat and bench press achievements were overshadowed West Sumatra's Risa Oktaviani, who chalked up 210kg in the squat and 157.5kg in the bench press.

However, Oktaviani lost in the 165kg deadlift. Susanti then used the situation to hit 190kg, 195kg, and 197.5kg barbells in the deadlift.

"This record-breaking is also Susanti's second gold for West Java in PON," West Java weightlifting coach Usdi Permana said here.

Susanti won her first PON gold medal for West Java at the West Java PON in 2016, Permana informed.

She also grabbed a bronze medal at the women's weightlifting world championship in Dubai in 2019 and a gold medal at the Asian Championship in Bandung, West Java, in 2017.

The 20th Papua PON is being held from October 2 to October 15, 2021. At least 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia are participating in the National Games, which feature 37 sports.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the event at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Sentani, Jayapura, Papua, on October 2, 2021. However, competitions for some sports had started earlier in mid-September.
