Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has warned that threats to world peace may not emerge from the military sector alone, but can also stem from corporate negligence.

He made the statement during the 5th International Conference on Law and Justice (ICLJ) on 'Sharia, Law and Sustainability in the New Normal', organized by the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University and televised here on Wednesday.

“The threats may be caused by corporates and businesses that do not pay attention to the environmental damage and people’s lives, in particular, their workers,” Amin highlighted.

One such incidence of corporate negligence that caused harm to workers was the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013, which claimed 1,132 lives, he said.

The building housed factories, a bank, apartments, and shops. One day before the accident, the management had been warned that there were some cracks in the building, Amin noted.

However, some employers ignored the warning and kept the factories open, which resulted in the deaths of workers, he added.

"The accident mirrored the corporate that did not pay attention to the safety of its workers and was not responsible for their protection," the Vice President noted.

Hence, Amin urged employers to impose the sharia working concept that assures workers’ safety.

"This shows that a framework in line with the ultimate objective of sharia— maqashid sharia— that assures the workers’ safety is needed," he stressed.

Such a sharia principle entails five important things: maintaining religion, soul, logic, generation, and property, he expounded.
