The youth should play an important role in fighting climate changeJakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has sought active participation of the youth in handling climate change.
"The youth have an idealistic, innovative character, and they are connected everywhere. The youth should play an important role in fighting climate change," he said during the 2021 Climate Festival - Climate Leaders Message 2021, which was held online on Monday.
According to Pandjaitan, the youth have a number of advantages in responding to problems caused by climate change. One of them is the fact that they can adapt easily, he pointed out.
The youth are good at adapting to the extent that they can quickly apply a low carbon lifestyle, he explained. To this end, the younger generation should be given a chance to be involved in the decision-making process related to the problem of climate change, he said.
"The youth should be given a chance to actively participate within the decision-making process at the local, national, and global level," he affirmed.
The government cannot handle the problem of climate change alone, he noted. It would also require effort and cooperation from the business world, regional governments, private enterprises, non-governmental organizations, the people, and foreign media, he elaborated.
The government has urged all stakeholders to take part in climate action to collectively reach the global emissions reduction and climate resilience target, he said.
"My hope is that all youth can be involved in environmental problems because this is a serious issue. Back in my day, this was deemed to be not too important. Currently, it has become unavoidable. Climate change problem is very important," the minister expounded.
