A total of 281 names were engraved on the memorial wall
Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - The names of 281 health workers, civil servants, and volunteers who died while fighting the coronavirus pandemic in Indonesia have been enshrined in the recently completed COVID-19 Heroes Struggle Monument in Bandung, West Java.

"A total of 281 names were engraved on the memorial wall. The monument commemorated fallen West Java health workers, civil servants, and volunteers who sacrificed their life for West Java residents during their struggle in the COVID-19 pandemic," head of West Java's Housing and Settlement Office, Boy Iman Nugraha, said in Bandung, West Java on Friday.

The monument is located within the West Java People's Struggle Monument Complex in the heart of Bandung city and was constructed under the memorial complex revitalization project, which also includes the construction of a welcome plaza, Nugraha informed.

"The initial plan was only to construct a welcome plaza in the memorial complex, but later we decided to construct the COVID-19 memorial dedicated to health workers, civil servants, and volunteers who sacrificed their lives for the people's benefit during the COVID-19 pandemic," the office head said.

The 281 names engraved on the memorial wall will serve as a reminder of the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed thousands of lives and profoundly affected people's lives, he stated.

The purpose of the COVID-19 memorial is to commemorate the fallen health heroes and be a medium of remembrance for West Java residents, Nugraha added.

"The monument is our medium to remember that our effort to control the COVID-19 pandemic was not easy and needed popular collaboration," Nugraha said.

West Java's Housing and Settlement Office has been tasked to revitalize the West Java People's Struggle Monument Complex since last year, he said adding, the initial planning was conceived in 2014.

The revitalization project includes general renovation works; the construction of a welcome plaza gate, handicraft product promotion space, and festival chamber; and renovation of the Gasibu Square located across the memorial complex, the official said.
