Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - The North Sumatra contingent clinched six gold, four silver, and one bronze medal on the first day of athletics matches at the National Paralympic Games (Peparnas) XVI at Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura, on Saturday.

The six gold medals were grabbed by Anini Trisea Yunanda in the F56 women's shot-put; Reza Pramana Perangin-angin in the F44 men's shot-put; Juliantik in the F55 women's shot-put; Nina Gusmita in the 400-m wheelchair number; Riadi Saputra in the F55 men's discus throw; and Reza Surya Amri in the F47 men's high jump.

Despite winning the gold medal, Perangin-angin said that he was dissatisfied with his performance.

"I am not fully satisfied with my current performance, as my personal best record on the shot-put is 11.60 meter," he remarked.

Perangin-angin's latest gold medal complemented his achievement at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games, when he had set a record of 11.36 meters in shot-put.

Another gold medal winner, Anini Trisea Yunanda, expressed her joy after winning her first gold medal in Peparnas athletics. Yunanda, who was earlier active in karate, also set a record of 6.53 meters in the women's shot-put.

"I actually expect myself to perform better than today as my ambition is to participate in the national training program to fulfill my dream to participate in international events, but I must admit that will be not easy as I must start from zero," she said.

Meanwhile, North Sumatra team coach Hardodi Sihombing said that the athletes mostly achieved the team's target but improvements in the time record and throw distance remain necessary for several athletes.

"Praise be to God, we achieved six gold medals on this day's matches. We should also laud the athletes who have successfully set their new personal best record and even surpassed their record in the ASEAN Para Games," the coach remarked.
