We suggest that there should be a comprehensive discussion between AFF and FIFA. FIFA could submit the proposal to every member country so that the suggestion could be reviewed and considered
Jakarta (ANTARA) - In a recent meeting with the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), the All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) expressed support for a proposal for holding the World Cup once in two years.

One of the reasons for PSSI's support is that the proposal could accelerate the queue for host candidate countries, PSSI secretary general, Yunus Nusi, said, according to information posted on the association's website here on Tuesday.

During the meeting, PSSI urged AFF to discuss the proposal with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), he added.

"We suggest that there should be a comprehensive discussion between AFF and FIFA. FIFA could submit the proposal to every member country so that the suggestion could be reviewed and considered," he suggested.

During the meeting with AFF, PSSI also expressed its desire to see ASEAN countries hosting the World Cup under a collective host scheme, he informed.

In addition, PSSI urged FIFA to reject bids from countries that have previously served as World Cup hosts so that all countries get an equal chance to hold the event, Nusi said.

PSSI also sought the support of FIFA, AFF, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the U-20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in 2023, he added.

"We are also concentrating to prepare for the U-20 World Cup in 2023. PSSI expects support from all parties so that the upcoming U-20 World Cup would proceed well," Nusi affirmed.

FIFA has been deliberating on the proposal to hold the World Cup once every two–four years ever since it was brought up by Saudi Arabia's football federation, he said.

Two regional federations, namely the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), have said that they do not support the idea, he added.

FIFA plans to have a global meeting to discuss the proposal on December 20, 2021.
