Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga lauded National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, over his decision to form the Women and Children Service Unit as its own directorate.

"I really laud the efforts of the National Police Chief, who pays special attention to the handling of cases of women and children. This is a breakthrough for law imposition that protects children and women," Puspayoga noted in a statement here on Tuesday.

The minister expects that the establishment of the directorate for women and child services would facilitate the handling of crime-related cases befalling women and children.

Puspayoga lauded the hard work of the National Police chief and his staff in handling various crimes against women and children all along.

The ministry recorded tens of thousands of cases of violence against children and women during the period from January 1 to December 2021 comprising 10,247 cases of violence against women and 14,517 cases of violence against children.

As many as 58.81 percent of the women are the victims of domestic violence. On the other hand, 54.66 percent of the victims of violence against children experienced sexual violence.

Puspayoga stated that currently, more people had come forward to report cases of sexual violence as compared to some time ago.

"Do not be afraid to speak up, so that we can handle cases of sexual violence against women and children together," she affirmed.

National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, affirmed that with the establishment of this standalone directorate, female victims would be served well, and they would be more at ease to report crimes that they experienced.

Later on, these cases related to women and children will be handled by the personnel, who are mostly policewomen.

In addition, the Women and Children Service Unit will provide psychological assistance services to handle the victims' mental health and psyche.

She believes these efforts could proffer a sense of security to victims, who would report and receive psychological assistance from female personnel, so that they really provide the best possible protection and assistance.
