Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has appealed to universities across Indonesia to fortify their position as institutions that implement a modern technology-based education system or function as educational technology (edutech) institutions.

"Higher education institutions must strengthen their position as edutech institutions by utilizing digital technology," Amin noted while delivering a scientific oration at the Open Meeting and the 59th Anniversary of Brawijaya University via video conference held from here, Wednesday.

Amin remarked that developments in science and technology were inevitable. He highlighted that digital technology had brought about a transformation in various aspects of the people's lives.

"For instance, the trade sector has shifted to e-commerce, while the banking world has been disrupted by the presence of fintech and various types of e-payments," he explained.

In addition, the vice president expounded that the medical and pharmaceutical sectors were increasingly being overshadowed by the existence of health tech or medtech. Likewise, the world of education has been massively disrupted by edutech.

According to Amin, the pandemic and technological developments have brought about changes in the political, economic, and socio-cultural landscape.

"We have been compelled to keep up with the rapid developments in technology," he noted.

To this end, the vice president expressed hope that Brawijaya University would continue to develop its curriculum to meet the people's demands.

On that occasion, he also urged Brawijaya University to develop its networks by establishing cooperation at the national and international levels, especially in the fields of research, innovation, and industry.

"I am optimistic that Brawijaya University would form a network with the best universities in the world through collaboration, such as by conducting an exchange of lecturers and students, joint research, and curriculum development," he remarked.
