If we implement the circular economy properly, up to 4.4 million new job opportunities will be created and around 75 percent of the new job opportunities will be available for women
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Green investment in the circular economic system will create 4.4 million new job opportunities in Indonesia by 2030, an official of the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency stated.

"If we implement the circular economy properly, up to 4.4 million new job opportunities will be created and around 75 percent of the new job opportunities will be available for women," the ministry's Director of Environment, Medrilzam, noted during a webinar on the transition to a green economy as viewed from Jakarta on Thursday.

Apart from creating job opportunities, the green investment scheme within the circular economic system will increase the national gross domestic product to reach Rp593 trillion (US$40.91 billion) to Rp638 trillion (US$44.02 billion) by 2030, he stated.

"According to our research, the circular economy has the potential to boost our gross domestic product to reach an average of Rp600 trillion (US$41.4 billion)," Medrilzam noted.

The circular economy will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 126 million tons of carbon dioxide and production waste in the range of 18-52 percent, as compared to the percentage of waste produced if no modification to the green economy was adopted, the director emphasized.

"Circular economy will significantly reduce the production waste as compared to the normal business. This means we can also reduce gas emissions," he stated.

Those projections are not a mere assumption without basis, the director of environment remarked while pointing to several developed countries that had benefited from the circular economic system.

"We may see those numbers as merely an assumption, but foreign countries have accelerated the transition to the circular economy. Some countries have also declared that most of their products are produced by the circular economic system," Medrilzam stated.
