At least 215 drug dealers have been transferred to Nusakambangan
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights, along with the Criminal Investigation Department of the National Police, thwarted 148 attempts to smuggle drugs into prisons and detention centers in 2021, an official said on Monday.

"This effort was carried out to support the national program for the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (P4GN)," coordinator of public relations and protocol of the Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Rika Aprianti, informed in a written statement received here on Monday.

Not only that, the ministry and the police's Criminal Investigation Unit also worked jointly to transfer convicts categorized as drug dealers to the maximum-security prison on Nusakambangan Island, she added.

"At least 215 drug dealers have been transferred to Nusakambangan," she disclosed.

In Nusakambangan Prison, drug dealers are locked up by implementing the "one-man-one-cell" system, she said. The transfer is intended to prevent illicit drug trafficking and drug dealers' influence on other inmates, she added.

The drug traffickers transferred to the prison come from different regions ranging from Jakarta, Banten, West Java, East Java, Aceh, South Sumatra, Lampung, Riau, Jambi, North Sumatra, Bali, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, to West Papua, the official said.

The ministry and police are also continuing to study and observe various ways of smuggling that perpetrators may use, she added. Training is continuing to be provided to officers to enhance supervision and increase awareness, she said.

Correctional services have three keys for carrying out their duties: early detection of disturbances in security and order, eradication of illicit drug trafficking, and synergy with other law enforcement authorities, Aprianti said.

The three keys are the primary weapon in the war against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, she added. This includes returning the duties and functions of correctional services as they should be, she noted.
