Jakarta (ANTARA) - Contraceptive devices can be immediately utilized after childbirth in order to prevent unwanted pregnancy, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) Head, Hasto Wardoyo, stated at a webinar on Monday.

Implementing the family planning program does not have to be delayed since currently, there are contraception devices that can be immediately used after childbirth, he remarked.

For instance, after the placenta is out, implants and IUD can immediately be inserted. Meanwhile, after the postpartum period, progesterone-only pills can be taken.

During the "The Importance of Modern Contraception for Family Planning Program and Improving Reproduction Health" webinar, he advised families that have several children and mothers over the age of 35 to conduct sterilization.

This is a method to permanently prevent pregnancy.

There are many who have sterilized themselves right after childbirth, he highlighted.

The insertion of contraceptive devices in health facilities or by midwives, who cooperate with the government, will be free of charge, Wardoyo informed.

In addition to the contraception devices themselves, the insertion service by the midwives will also be covered by the government.

As a result, those who cannot afford the family planning program will be assisted.

There are a variety of contraceptive devices to pick from based on the condition and need, such as implant, IUD, family planning pill, condom, and sterilization, he remarked.

"You can use the hormonal ones or not. If you are still breastfeeding, then use the progesterone pill in order to not disrupt the flow of milk," he noted.

"Private companies have also provided contraceptive devices that can maintain skin health, avert pimples, and prevent pain during menstruation," he remarked.

Earlier, Wardoyo stated that the agency aims to ensure that 70 percent of the mothers immediately wear contraceptive device after childbirth.
