Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has said he hopes that the management and education systems at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) will meet international university standards.

The Vice President conveyed the message while chairing a meeting on the progress status of UIII’s development, which is one of the National Strategic Projects, at the Vice President's Palace, here on Wednesday.

"As one of the National Strategic Projects, it should be managed and organized in accordance to the standards and norms of international universities that have global advantages, as UIII's status is PTN BH (state universities having legal entities) and is intended as an international university," Amin said in a statement released the same day.

In addition to conforming to international standards, the Vice President asked UIII to become a center of excellence for global Islamic civilization.

"I need to remind you that Indonesia has become one of the centers for the study of world Islamic civilization, especially regarding the successful implementation of wasathiyah (moderate) Islam, which is a current global trend. Therefore, the UIII development initiative is intended to become a global reference center for the implementation of Wasathiyah Islam," he explained.

He then lauded four study programs that are currently running at UIII, namely Islamic Studies, Political Science, Economics, and Educational Science.

In the future, however, it will be necessary to develop a curriculum that would make UIII a center of excellence for Islamic civilization globally, he said.

Regarding technical development issues, budget provision, and facilities for supporting the learning process, he said the issues must be resolved immediately in accordance with the existing laws and regulations.

He also directed the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, to carry out the physical development of UIII.
