Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) recorded 338,496 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) against women in 2021 based on data from Komnas Perempuan, service institutions, and the Religious Courts System Bodies (Badilag).

"A significant increase, specifically 50 percent, was recorded in the number of cases of gender-based violence against women, with 338,496 cases (recorded) in 2021, from 226,062 cases in 2020," Komnas Perempuan Deputy Chair Olivia C. Salampessy stated at the 2022 Komnas Perempuan Annual Notes as monitored here on Monday.

Salampessy also revealed that reports on the cases of GBV against women increased by 80 percent, from 2,134 cases reported in 2020 to 3,838 reports in 2021.

Those reports were made by women victims of violence to Komnas Perempuan.

Moreover, Badilag also recorded a 52-percent increase in cases, from 215,694 in 2020 to 327,629 in 2021. However, based on the service institutions' data, the number of cases decreased by 15 percent, or 1,205 cases, with the number of cases in 2021 totaling 7,029.

"This is because in the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, several service institutions have stopped operating. The case documentation system is also still inadequate, and resources are limited," she explained.

According to Salampessy, Komnas Perempuan also did not receive information regarding the state of cases of violence against women in the provinces of West Sulawesi and Central Kalimantan.

Most of the data submitted to Komnas Perempuan by filling out and returning questionnaires were from institutions in Java Island, she noted.

"If the capacity of institutions is adequate and information is available and women have access to the communication channels provided, it is predictable that the amount of data collected can be much larger than the previous year," the Komnas Perempuan deputy chair remarked.
