Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Lestari Moerdijat encouraged women to continue to improve their knowledge and abilities in various fields to play an active role in society and eliminate the bias against womankind.

"In everyday life, we still face biased assessments of women's work, so gender discrimination and stereotypes still exist in people's daily lives," she noted in a written statement here on Monday.

Moerdijat conveyed the statement to welcome International Women's Day celebrated every March 8th.

In 2022, International Women's Day is commemorated with the theme of "Break The Bias," as women in the world realize that bias makes it difficult for them to advance.

She assessed that as part of the world community, Indonesian women must have a firm resolve to break the bias against the female gender.

The MPR deputy speaker encouraged Indonesian women to play a more significant role in state politics.

Moerdijat believes that laws, such as Law Number 12 of 2003 on General Elections, Law Number 2 of 2008 on Political Parties, and Law Number 10 of 2008 on General Elections for members of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Legislative Body (DPRD) that requires political parties to include at least 30 percent of women's representation in legislative nominations and establishments as well as in administration at the central level, must be welcomed by Indonesian women through capacity-building efforts in various fields.

"The participation of more women in the decision-making process in the state will strengthen the impetus for the Indonesian people to be able to eradicate the bias faced by women completely," she remarked.

The MPR deputy speaker expressed optimism that the community would fully support the efforts of Indonesian women in fighting for equality, so that the prevention of violence can continue to be enhanced.
