Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto emphasized the need for the younger generation to understand science and technology in order to compete in the 5.0 era.

"In addition, this generation must be independent, creative, adaptive, collaborative, and innovative as well as comprehend science and technology in order to be competitive in the 5.0 era," Hartarto stated at a national seminar as quoted here on Tuesday.

The total number of Indonesians in the young and productive age group reaches 191 million, or 70 percent of the total population. This population regularly surfs the internet for an average of some eight hours a day, so Indonesia has huge digital economic potential.

"During the 2021-2022 period, internet users in Indonesia also increased by 2.1 million (people) from the past year. These developments will certainly be a good capital for us to build the economy in this digital era," he stated.

According to the minister, in the next 15 years, Indonesia would require at least nine million people or yearly 600 thousand digital talents, who are able to become highly competitive technopreneurs.

The government has expedited the implementation of several measures to increase the number of digital talents in Indonesia, one of which is through the Pre-Employment Card Program re-opened for batch 23 on February 17.

The government encourages people to hone new skills more easily through the several types of training available, especially digital-oriented ones.

“The Pre-Employment Card Program is not only reskilling and upskilling, but it is also encouraged for those affected by the pandemic and keen to have a go at entrepreneurship. In addition to the Pre-Employment Card Program, various digital trainings were also conducted in 34 provinces that are part of the National Digital Literacy Movement," he remarked.

Youngsters were also expected to offer more job vacancies to the public by getting involved in entrepreneurship, supported by the government, through the People's Business Credit Program.

The government has increased the program's ceiling to Rp373.17 trillion in 2022 in response to the massive financing requirements and also provided the sharia-based People's Business Credit Program to cater to business actors preferring that type of financing.
